Week 8: Gaming
It was interesting, exploring the suggested gaming sites and trying out a few of the games. This was not my first experience with games online, but I wouldn't say they're anything I do very often. I've helped the kids with their Webkinz games -- and yes, played a few myself! Those are a little different, in that they are definitely not free. You get a year of access to webkinz.com with each Webkinz stuffed animal you buy. It isn't too pricey though -- $9 -$12 for each animal. I've also spent a little time playing the online version of Settlers of Catan, as my husband and I were trying to learn how to play. It's a four-person game, and so very difficult for two people to learn by themselves! Today, I played daBomb Pong on gametop.com. It was fun, and just about my speed. Just like Pong, except the ball is a bomb. If you miss or hit it off the table, you blow up!
Gaming programs for teens are great for the library. I do believe there is a lot of learning going on when they are playing these games. Just looking at the role playing/adventure ones and realizing, "No way! Extremely too complicated for me right now!" tells me there's quite a lot to it for the teens as they get into it.
The best thing about this lesson is gaining a new understanding of the different types of games available, and a chance to explore them a bit. My knowledge is not deep, but I think it is much improved now that I've taken a look.
