"I sometimes wonder if Facebook thinks I'm cheating on it with Twitter." scalzi, Twitter post, 4/10/09

Week 9: Social Networking

I got on Facebook a couple of months ago and signed up for Twitter back during "Twitter Week" of this training. I am on Shelfari, and participate in one or two hobby-related forums as well. I love Facebook because it is people I already know in real life, but am just not able to see every day. I can talk to my husband's cousins, my friends from library school, and even the people who grew up down the street from me. We already had one Facebook-inspired "block reunion" back in March. I also love my hobby groups, as I can talk with other people who share interests.

Sometimes, the two worlds collide. On my hobby list, a recent thread was "Who's on Twitter?" People shared their Twitter names and what they usually tweet about/how often they tweet. Sometimes, you get to meet these people in person, and then I guess you could add them to your Facebook friends, too!

Social networking and the library? Obviously, there are many opportunities to share professional information and to network professionally. You can join sites for just about any interest you may have: library topics, book and literature related, technology or any personal interest. All of it contributes to expanded knowledge, which is what we are about!
